In the Archipelago of the Azores there are about 227 species of birds, 33 of which annually nest in these islands, one third being endemic birds. Some of these species are rare and on they’re way to extinction, as in the case of the "Priolo" (murina Pyrrhula pyrrhula). The Priolo is an endemic bird protected on the island of S. Miguel, therefore does not exist in any part of the world. During the years and due to isolation, some of the species have acquired distinct characteristics that are possible to find in the continent. Bird watching is excellent any time of the year.
